The essentials
- When: 3–6 December 2026 — the race is on Sunday 6 December
- Where: Yas Marina Circuit, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi
- From Downtown / the Corniche: ~30 km, 25–35 min on an ordinary day — longer on race days
- From Zayed International (AUH): ~20 km, 15–20 min on an ordinary day
- Getting there: free on-island shuttles for ticket holders, a taxi or ride-hailing app, or a chauffeur held for the race weekend
Yas Marina Circuit is not hard to reach. It sits on an island that is closer to the airport than the city centre is, the motorway runs straight to it, and on any other weekend of the year the drive from the Corniche is a quiet half-hour.
Grand Prix weekend is different for one reason: everyone leaves at the same time. Arrivals spread across a long afternoon, but the chequered flag, and later the last song of the after-race concert, send tens of thousands of people towards the same few bridges at once. Almost everything worth planning follows from that.
Know which day you are planning
The four days do not behave the same way, and neither does the traffic.
| Day | What happens | Transport pressure |
|---|---|---|
| Thursday 3 December | The circuit opens; pit lane walk for some ticket holders | Moderate |
| Friday 4 December | Practice sessions, evening programme | Building |
| Saturday 5 December | Qualifying, evening programme | High |
| Sunday 6 December | The race, evening programme | The highest of the year on Yas Island |
Session times and the after-race concert line-up are published by the organisers closer to the weekend — check the official Grand Prix app before you fix your plans. The after-race concerts are held at Etihad Park, the open-air venue next to the circuit, not inside the circuit itself.
Getting there: the honest comparison
Stay on Yas Island. If your hotel is on the island, you may be able to walk, and free shuttles have connected the hotels, Yas Mall and the grandstands for ticket holders. In recent years they ran roughly every fifteen minutes until around 1 am. This is the simplest way to do the weekend, and it is why the island's hotels sell out first.
Drive and park. In recent years Yas Mall has been the main parking hub, with shuttles from the car park to the circuit; some tickets also include parking closer to the track. Arrive early — the approach roads tighten long before the first session — and remember that a car park empties at the same pace as everything else.
Public bus. Buses run from the main bus terminal in the city to Yas Island in around an hour, after which you change to a circuit shuttle. Cheap and reliable on the way in; slow on the way out, when every bus fills at the first stop.
Taxi or ride-hailing. Both will drop you close to the gates. The way in is easy. The way out is the problem: collection points have been set up near Ferrari World and Yas Mall, and in the hour after the race the queue for a taxi, and the wait for an app car to reach you through the closures, is where most of the evening goes.
A chauffeur held for the weekend. One car and one driver for the days you choose. Your chauffeur drops you at the point that is open that day, waits nearby, and meets you at a pickup point you agreed in advance — not one you look for in a crowd. Between sessions your things stay in the car.
Whatever you choose, the gate you should use is printed on your ticket, and the official app carries the circuit map.
Leaving: the part that decides your evening
The moment the race ends, three crowds start moving at once: the grandstands, the hospitality areas, and the island's hotels and restaurants sending their own guests home. Shuttles keep running, but you will queue for them. Taxis are in short supply exactly when everyone wants one.
Three things help:
- Don't leave at the flag. Even the organisers suggest staying for the after-race concert — the first wave clears while you are still inside.
- Agree the pickup point before you go in. "Outside the gate" is not a meeting point on race day. A named spot away from the main exit is.
- Have the car already in position. A pre-booked driver who is waiting for you is the difference between walking to your car and joining a queue that is still growing.
Staying in Dubai?
Plenty of fans stay in Dubai for the race. On a normal day it is around an hour to an hour and a half each way by road, and on race days the Abu Dhabi end of that journey slows down like everything else.
One honest note: we can't collect you in Dubai. Our licence is issued in Abu Dhabi and covers pickups in Abu Dhabi only. What we can do is the way home — from Yas Island back to your hotel in Dubai after the race or the concert, which is the leg most people dread anyway. If the trip allows it, spending the race nights in Abu Dhabi saves two or three hours on every day you go to the circuit.
Flying in for the race
Zayed International is about twenty minutes from Yas Island, so many visitors go straight from the plane to the island. Arrival days fill up the airport's car options quickly, and the day after the race a large part of the crowd flies home at the same time. Book the airport transfer in both directions when you book your tickets, not when you land.
The short version
- Yas Marina Circuit is ~30 km from Downtown and ~20 km from the airport. The distance is never the problem.
- Sunday 6 December is the busiest evening of the year on Yas Island.
- Getting there is easy by any means. Leaving is the part to plan.
- Agree the pickup point before you go in, and consider staying for the concert.
- Staying in Dubai: we can't pick you up there, but we can drive you back after the race.
- Book cars for race weekend early — by late November very little on the island is uncommitted.
Race-week rates are not published, because they depend on which days you need and how long the car is held. Send your dates and your hotel on WhatsApp and you get a fixed, all-inclusive figure in writing before you commit to anything.
Continue planning your Abu Dhabi trip
- A car held for Grand Prix weekend — the same vehicle and the same private driver across the days you choose, with the road closures somebody else's problem.
- Abu Dhabi airport transfer — meet and greet at arrivals, and the ride back when the race weekend ends.
- Private transfers to Yas Island — for the rest of your stay, when the island is just a half-hour drive again.
- Getting to Etihad Arena — the indoor arena on the same island, and how a concert night there works.
- Abu Dhabi to Dubai — the drive home if you are staying in Dubai.
